Gottschalk: A Night in the Tropics Review

Every once in a while, I like to buy a CD of a composer I'm not familiar with (and with NAXOS's low prices, why not?). When I got home and listened to this one, once wasn't enough. I listened twice through. This CD is real fun!!

In his day, Gottschalk was called "the Chopin of Creoles." Most of his writing was for the piano and this CD is generally short piano pieces arranged for orchestra. The music mixes strong folk melodies and New Orleans Creole inspired syncopation with the European Classical tradition- the result being a distinctly american divertimenti.

The music as a whole is very motif oriented with a touch of variation and some interesting arrangement twists. While and orchestral CD, the piano gets a lot of attention, giving us some nice interplay between the two.

The only complaint I have is that the CD was recorded at a music festival where professional musicians are playing side by side with selected 'pre-professionals.' I'm not a snob and normally it wouldn't bother me, but Gottschalk's unusual syncopation tends to be unprofessionally slopppy at times. Fortunately, any mistakes are in the supporting insturments. No star shall be subtracted because NAXOS has done such a great job giving us a quality CD at a good price.

This works great for what I needed to keep my daughter from chewing on the side of the crib, only thing is, recently she has discovered how easily it pulls apart since the only real thing that holds it in is a few velcro straps. I think there could be some things built into the top underside to tie it down or help reinforce it. Once one of the velcro straps is undone the kids have access to at least a 1/3 of the railing. It's very good for when they can just stand up, but once they get more advanced they can remove it easier - so I think I will be adding some things to mine - sewing on some straps on some snaps or something to make it continue to work for me.

We were having trouble getting our 18m old son to sleep in his own bed. He was used to sleeping in our bed with us. When he would fall asleep in our bed, we would move him into his room to his bed. The minute he touched the mattress he would wake right up. I was looking to buy a new toddler mattress when I came across this mattress topper. What a difference!! I can't say that he is sleeping through the night yet, but we no longer have to let him fall asleep in our bed. He climbs right into his bed without a fuss. The only issue we had with the topper was the smell. We had to let it air out for a few days b/c the smell was so strong. We have had it for a few weeks now and the smell is almost gone, definately not as strong. All in all, great product. We are very happy!!

These are fantastic! I was so afraid of using regular bumpers because of the risk of SIDS, but when I removed the bumpers, my daughter was constantly getting an arm or leg stuck in the slats which would cause her to wake up...usually screaming at the top of her lungs! I didn't want to spend a lot because I had no idea how they would work, so I bought the least expensive thinking that I wouldn't be too upset if I didn't like them, or that I would buy the more expensive ones if I did. Well, these are just perfect!!

She is all over the place when she's sleeping and more than once I've found her with her face smushed right into the bumpers! If I place my hand on the outside, I can feel her breath coming through since they're mesh-like. Of course I move her away from being right against them, but if I didn't know in the middle of the night when we're all sleeping, at least I do know that she is still able to breath just fine.

I highly recommend these for all babies!!
